Week 7 Assignment 2
1.
How can you ensure that struggling readers have
access to texts they can easily read?
The best way to work on fluency is to provide struggling
students with a successful reading experience so that they will want to read
and learn more. That can only happen when they are given books that they can
easily read. Having a classroom library filled with plenty of books on
different reading levels is a fantastic way of giving students access to books
they can read accurately, fluently and with understanding. Allotting time for
independent reading is also important. Another way to ensure that struggling
students have access to appropriate level texts is by providing it to them.
After reading a book in class, send the book home with the struggling student to
reread. Only after the child has mastered the level should he be given higher
level books.
2.
How can you foster a learning environment in
which students have many opportunities to practice reading?
Practicing reading is vital when working on fluency. In my
opinion, getting students to enjoy reading is the first thing that needs to
happen. When kids enjoy reading they will practice on their own. In the video,
the teachers provided many opportunities to practice reading like reading
theater and guided reading. Reading theater allows students to play out the
text they are reading. This gives students practice in an exciting way. Independent
reading and guided reading also gives students time to practice reading. In my
classroom I would give students the opportunity of reading out loud to the
class. This honor would excite the student and be an opportunity to practice
reading.
3.
Describe ways in which you can model fluent
reading in your classroom throughout the day.
There are many ways that a teacher can model fluent reading
to her students. Many opportunities arise throughout a lesson, and a teacher
should use the time to do so. Firstly, when a teacher writes information on the
board and then reads it aloud, she is modelling fluent reading. doing a read aloud
is also a way to model fluent reading. By reading smoothly, correctly, and with
expression the teacher is modelling the 3 aspects of fluent reading.
