Week 5 Assignment 3
You can view my running record here.
Chaya seems to be reading at a great
level. During the running record assessment, she got stuck only a few times. This
proves that she is reading well and might just need a little more practice to improve on fluency on
this level before advancing to an upper level. Her accuracy rate was_97%__ and
error rate was_1:40____! Good for her!
When it came to comprehension, Chaya
did amazingly as well. She was able to recall most of the details of the story
and even remembered a few of the differences between whales and fish. She was
quite excited about the book, since she absolutely loves all kinds of fish! 😊
In the case of Chaya, since her comprehension
was great, it seems that with just a little more practice to work on her
fluency, she may very well be ready to continue to higher level books. Books
with harder words and a little more complicated text. I would do one last
lesson on this level before preceding to the next level.
In my next lesson with Chaya, I will
work on standard RL.1.10
Lesson Objective: Chaya will demonstrate
fluency and comprehension skills:
I would first start with fluency cards.
Fluency cards are little strips with
fluency sentences, it allows students to practice reading decodable and non-decodable
words with fluency. Examples of phrases are;
this is a good day, by the water, more than the other, what did he say, it
seemed to good, it’s hard to open etc.
These sentences are light, and the child
gets to practice reading with fluency. It also will give her a good feeling to
start the lesson and know her work. It will help her for the rest of the lesson.
Next, I would introduce the new book
we will be reading together.
Provide student with copy of selected
title.
Set the purpose:
Let her know that today we will be reading the selection through a combination
of Lead Reading, independent reading, and Whisper Reading.
I would start the book, and
model fluent reading. I would then ask Chaya to take over and continue reading out
loud. I will ask questions throughout the story to check that Chaya is following
and grasping the materials being read. Lastly, she would finish off the book
quietly to herself.
During whisper reading, I
give Chaya a telephone to talk into, to help her envision that somebody is
listening.
Discuss the story by asking questions to
ensure that she has understood. A worksheet with questions on the story is a
fantastic way of finding out whether she has comprehended.
Before finishing the lesson, I will
give Chaya a timer. We will predetermine how long it should take her to read x
amount of pages. She will be able to practice twice before I listen to her. She
will pass if;
- the WCPM score meets or exceeds the predetermined goal;
- three or fewer errors are made;
- she reads the passage with correct phrasing and attention to punctuation; and,
- she can correctly answer a few comprehension questions.
We record her WCPM on a chart that we keep updating.
I assign Chaya with homework- a short story to read with her mom. I encourage
her to time herself to see if she can get to a better rate then the one in class.
Before leaving the lesson, I hand Chaya a small index card which I call an
exit card. I encourage her to write down one thing she learned during this
lesson.

Gitty, you did a great job on you lesson plan. You included excellent methods and activities to increase Chaya's fluency!
